Black Box Theater at Wooster

The Black Box is an amazing place to teach the art of theater.

The intimate space helps students of all ages really relax and be themselves, which is the first and most important part of stagecraft. Doing theatrical productions in the Black Box requires and inspires creative thinking, collaboration, and integrity to telling your story. Students are forced to deliver honest, truthful performances because the audience is right there. There’s no place to hide. You can’t fake anything. In that way, Wooster is really good at training actors from a young age that this is a safe place to try things, to take risks, and to focus on relationships on- and off-stage.

That’s what Wooster does really well, and the Black Box is a microcosm of the personal, meaningful, and visible learning that is the Wooster experience.

Black Box Theater at Wooster

I’ve seen students who have never thought of themselves as actors try the Acting Workshop class out of curiosity and then go on to participate in our productions and pursue theater in college. I’ve also have kids take Acting Workshop and discover a new part of themselves and new interest that helps them to become more confident, well-rounded and happy individuals. Theater at Wooster gives young people the tools of self-inquiry and discovery that set them up for success and happiness in adolescence and adulthood."
