Who's Running in 2020?

As of now, one Republican candidate (not counting president Trump) and 20 (and counting) Democratic candidates have joined the race for the White House in 2020. Here's a quick synopsis for some candidates who have made news recently.

Republican Candidates

William F. Weld

Former governor of Mass.; former federal prosecutor

Weld's primary goal in the 2020 election is to challenge President Trump and to represent the "alienated moderate Republicans." In the 2016 election, he ran for Vice President for the Libertarian party. Weld is known for favoring fiscal restraint and free trade, having moderate views on immigration and has taken steps to decriminalize marijuana.

Democratic Candidates

Bernie Sanders

Senator from Vermont; former congressman

Senator Sanders was the runner-up in the 2016 Democratic primary behind Hillary Clinton. Compared to other Democratic candidates he is opposing, he has the most experience in the race for the White House. He is self-described as a "Democratic-Socialist" and is known for wanting universal medicare, free college tuition and "curtaining the influence of billionaires."

Kamala Harris

Senator from California; former attorney general of California; former San Francisco district attorney

Kamala Harris is most known for being one of the few Democrats to join the Senate after 2016 and her tough questioning during Brett Kavanaugh's hearing. Her legislation to cut taxes for the middle class was released last fall and her campaign looks like it will mostly center around civil rights issues.

Beto O'Rourke

Former congressman of Texas

O'Rourke lost the midterm election to Ted Cruz but gained a social media following through his campaign. His message of unity across state lines and "red-state liberalism" was spread through his various Instagram Lives and social media posts. He has focused on immigration reform, marijuana legalization and rural hospital access.

Pete Buttigieg

Mayor of South Bend, Indiana; Former U.S military

Better known as "Mayor Pete," Buttigieg launched a 'long shot' campaign hoping to reach a younger generation along with his own (Millennial). Mayor Pete would be the youngest president elected at 37 (38 during the inauguration) and the first openly gay president as well. He has focused his campaign on climate change, economic issues and his generation's identity.

Cory Booker

Senator from New Jersey; former mayor of Newark

Senator Booker has led the Senate on criminal justice reform. The main premise of his current campaign is fundraising and trying to unite the country.

Elizabeth Warren

Senator from Massachusetts; Harvard Professor

Senator Warren has done research for her campaign since 2012. She is well known for being progressive and trying to crack down on the "corrupt politicians," mostly President Trump.

John Hickenlooper

Former governor of Colorado; Former mayor of Denver

Known to be a political moderate, Hickenlooper is known to win over 'purple states.' He is looking mostly for a broad coalition with the Republicans. He has stressed his opinions and the importance of social issues. He wants to expand medicaid, protect gay rights and stress gun control during his campaign.

Jay Inslee

Governor of Washington former congressman

Gov. Inslee is a two-term governor, focusing in his environmental policies. Inside the Democratic party, he is known for his tough and strict policy changes and reforms involving the climate. He has embraces the green energy jobs program.

  • Eric Swalwell- Congressman from California
  • Marianne Williamson- Self-help author
