Girls Lacrosse Celebrate the Seniors
Posted 05/29/2019 03:02PM

Last Thursday, the girls had a game against Litchfield Club, which was our last game of our season and our Senior Night to honor our two seniors, Kate Hynes and Libby Hinshaw. Before we talk about the result of the game, we interviewed both of our seniors about their experience being on the Girls Varsity Lacrosse team since freshman year.

How has the program changed since you were both freshmen?

Libby: I think that the program has improved since I was a freshman. That has obviously shown in our record, but as a captain I can see it every time we are together. We are more motivated and willing to work hard to create a good, well rounded team.

Kate: The difference between my freshman year and now has been crazy. The team is so much more motivated in practice and in games. This is also the most positive team I've ever been on, which I think makes such a difference. My freshman year we only won three games all year and this year we only lost three in the league.

What has it been like to be co-captains this season?

Libby: For the most part it was pretty easy. At first it was difficult to get used to leading activities and trying to set an example, but as the season went on it became more natural. There was also a moment during the season where we had to make an apology on behalf of the team and it definitely showed me the tougher aspects of being a leader. I wish I tried to include the freshmen more, but thankfully we did have some team bonding moments. I couldn't ask for better co-captains than Alice and Kate. We see eye to eye on things and get along really well as friends and as leaders.

Kate: I was so excited to be captain this year!! It was such an honor to represent the team and be a leader. I'm so grateful to be chosen by all the members, it was such an honor.

How has the season been compared to the past seasons?

Libby: As I said before, the numbers show our skill has grown a lot as a team. As gratifying as that is, what I really loved about this season was how much we cheered everyone on and bonded as a group. Also, there were some times when other teams may have thrown in the towel and lost their composure, but we always found our own wins in our losses and kept our heads held high. I can without a doubt say this has been the best season of my four years playing Wooster GVLAX.

Kate: Like I said earlier, I think the biggest thing this year was our teams positivity. I really don't know what made the difference this year compared to others but the whole team has such a great outlook going through the season. I hope this attitude continues next year because it makes the whole season even more fun.

Favorite moment from all 4 years?

Libby: One of my favorite moments from a sports perspective is from my junior year when we beat Watkinson for the first time. We worked so hard for that win and got to semi-finals because of it. That was so much further than where we were my freshman year. I wish I could choose a moment from more of a team perspective, but the last four years, and this season especially, have been filled with so many great moments and I can't choose just one.

Kate: Without question beating Watkinson last year. After almost 3 years of being taunted by "the stall" we finally beat them in the semi final. We really came together as a team for that win too. We wanted to beat them so bad!

What you will miss the most about the team?

Libby: Obviously I will miss all of my teammates! More specifically though, I will miss the "team bonding", bus rides, and inside jokes we all have. I will miss the coaches and the feeling of satisfaction when I play really good defense. But most of all I will miss the team spirit and connection that we all have with each other. It's been a great four years and this season was the best one yet! I will definitely be visiting in seasons to come and I can't wait to see us win championships.

Kate: I'm going to miss being on a team so much. It's such an amazing feeling. I've met so many kids that I never would have normally been friends with just from being on a team. It's such a bonding experience and I'm going to miss it so much.

Although every game is important to us, this one especially was, since it was the seniors' last game playing for Wooster. We all played to our fullest, and we beat a strong Litchfield team 12-6! After the game, we celebrated our seniors. Thank you, Kate and Libby, for being such great captains this year and for always motivating and supporting the team during your four years on GVLAX!
