WiNK Series: 1,000 Books to Read Before You Die
Posted 12/06/2019 02:45PM

On December 14, Brooks Byrnes and I attended Battle of the Books, which took place in the Ridgefield library. It was the type of thing my parents encouraged me to go to, and in addition to that Mr. Brynes and Rich Cohen, a family friend, were participating. The whole point of the event was to offer a platform for five passionate readers to make a case for a book they believed should be in James Mutich's 1,000 Books To Read Before you Die. James Mutich, former President of the Board at Wooster, was there and acted as an emcee in prior to and in between each presentation. Each adult had five minutes to present why they believed the book they chose deserved to be read by everyone, and at the end of the event, the audience voted on the winner. This year the winner was Mr. Byrnes who presented a convincing argument for Devotions, a collection of poems by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, Mary Oliver.

My Wink articles this trimester are inspired by this event. Each week I will write a review/make a case for a book, poem, or short story I believe should also be included in 1,000 Books To Read Before You Die.

Stay tuned!
