The Varsity hockey season started off with a bang, as the team played Hamden Hall Wednesday night at the Northford Ice Pavilion. It was quite a battle for the team. We played a great first period, with freshman Chris Sager scoring the first goal of the season late in the period to put us up 1-0.
Going into the second period, Hamden Hall responded by scoring two goals from point-blank within the first 10 minutes of the period. The game began to get very chippy with multiple penalties being given to both teams. Freshman Milan Khameneh responded by ringing the bell, and putting the puck in the back of the net for a late second-period goal.
Going into the third period, blood began to boil for both teams, and it was some of the most physical hockey the team has ever played. Hamden Hall scored another uncontested goal in the front net halfway through the period. As the game continued, we caught a break when Hamden Hall got a 2-minute-minor for roughing, and senior Drew Greeley took to action. Greeley, a major threat in the offensive zone, buried one with five minutes left in the 3rd period to tie the game.
With 2 ½ minutes left in the game, a scrum broke out between Wooster and Hamden Hall after one of Hamden's players crosschecked Chris Sager in the back. Two separate minors were given to two Wooster players and one 5-minute-major was given to Hamden Hall. The gamed turned into a 4 on 3 in favor of Hamden Hall.
We did our best to defend the attack by clearing shooting lanes and blocking the puck, but one puck took a bad bounce off a skate right to a Hamden Hall forward sitting on the back door. The game ended in a tough 4-3 loss but overall it was a great first performance by the time.
Be sure to come to the pack the rink FRIDAY THE 13 at Danbury Ice Arena. PUCK DROPS AT 8:10 PM
