Premier League Recap

by: Chris Lopes & Max Rainville

This weekend's return to the Premier league reminded the world why it is the most entertaining and highest-viewed league on the planet. This week provided viewers with a thrilling North-London Derby and a Manchester Derby, which will go down in the history books. Along with high-scoring games featured throughout this weekend, we'll recap the best games along with in-depth summaries.

The two-week wait for the Premier League to return proved to be worth it, as the highly anticipated North London Derby, a clash between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, was an enthralling match to watch. Arsenal dominated the game, proving they were first in the table. Tottenham was undefeated up to this point and went into this game desperately needing a win to catch up to their fierce rivals. The game started strong for Arsenal as their patient play presented them with plenty of opportunities to score. In the 20th minute, Thomas Partey, a Ghanaian international, curled in a beautiful shot from the top of the box to give Arsenal the lead. Then less than 10 minutes later, Gabriel, Arsenal's center-back, tackled Richarlison in the box, and Harry Kane coolly slotted the penalty straight down the middle to bring the game to 1-1. The half ends, 1-1, as both teams are pushing to score their second goal. In the 49th minute, Bukayo Saka curled a shot on goal, which Hugo Lloris saved, and Gabriel Jesus, Arsenal's star poacher, scored the rebound to make it 2-1. The real turning point in the match was when Emerson, a Spurs defender, committed a terrible tackle on Martinelli's ankle, earning him a straight red card, reducing Spurs to 10 men, and forcing them to work for the equalizer, a man down. Arsenal was now in complete control, and in the 67th minute, Granit Xhaka got to the edge of the box, beat the defender, and slotted the ball into the bottom right corner, sealing the win for Arsenal. Arsenal convincingly closed out the game, pushing them four points clear of second place, Manchester City.

The Manchester Derby is a battle between Manchester United Red Devils and Manchester City. The Derby never fails to draw the attention of fans from all around the world. Manchester City took the lead early in the game thanks to an eighth-minute goal from Phil Phoden, scoring 1-0. After this early goal, the Red Devils tried to keep their spirits up to tie it up. Unfortunately for the Red Devils, Manchester City's newest recruit Erling Haaland scored a fantastic header for his 12th goal of the season, making the game 2-0 in the 34th minute. Manchester City would dominate the Red Devils for the rest of the game as they scored in the 37th, and 44th minute of the first half, making the score at halftime 4-0. As the second half starts, United keeps up the pressure in hopes of getting an early goal which eventually comes thanks to Antony as he rips one past Ederson to find the bottom right corner of the goal. Unfortunately for United, Haaland and Foden scored again as they completed their hat-tricks to make the game 6-1. United managed to get two late goals in the 84th and 91st minutes of the game. The game ended 6-3 in favor of Manchester City as Haaland scored his third hat-trick in his first-ever season in the Premier league. Haaland has now scored three hat-tricks in only eight games in the Premier League and is currently on track to score around 30 goals this season. This win for City put them only one point behind first-place Arsenal and sent the Red devils into sixth place as they battled for a spot in the top five.

This weekend featured a lot of big matchups as the Premier League returned from the International break. In addition, this Tuesday and Wednesday marked the return of the Champions League, which we will be writing about for our next article next Friday. So stay tuned for more as we write about the Premier League, Champions League, and the World Cup.
