Keeping Up With...

Emma Delattre, '20

by: Evan Bourgeault

Emma Delattre graduated from Wooster in 2020. Emma was a strong student at Wooster but didn't have the time to participate in the extracurriculars Wooster offered. Emma was constantly traveling during high school because of her independent activity. Emma loved race car driving, as she has been racing since she was 8 and at 11 she started competing on an international level. Once Emma was 17 she traveled the world, competing in New York, New Jersey, Louisiana, Utah, California, and Indiana. Internationally Emma raced in Canada, Europe and Italy. Emma represented Team USA in the 2018 Rok International World Championship.

Now that we have learned a little about Emma, let's get into the interview!

What college are you going to?

I am currently a Junior at George Washington University in DC!

What are you studying?

I am currently majoring in Biology and Data Science with a minor in Psychology. I am very indecisive, I changed my major about 20 times before deciding on this, and I'm still not fully set on it.

Have you made any new friends?

Yes, surprisingly! I have made a lot of friends through my classes, through various club organizations and from my sorority! I think the idea of making new friends was intimidating and scary at first. My entire freshman year was remote, so it did make building friendships and meeting new people challenging. However, some of my best friends that I have, I made online my freshman year which is crazy to think.

Do you keep in touch with your graduating class?

Yes, I still keep in touch with some of my friends in my graduating class! I talk and text with Michaela, Alex, Ali, Riley and a few others fairly often which is nice. I saw Michaela, Alex and Ali for the first time in over a year in June! I need to be better at keeping in touch with the other members of class of 2020!

What is your favorite thing about college?

My favorite thing about college is being in DC! DC has so much to offer from the great museums, restaurants, the really bad sports teams, and the unique experiences that make you say, only in DC. I also have enjoyed midnight walks with my friends around the monuments, exploring the beautiful parts of the city, and having the Presidential motorcade drive by on your way to class. One unique experience going to college in DC was this summer when Roe vs Wade was overturned and I participated in marches and rallies throughout the city. We went to the Supreme Court which was a very surreal experience.

What has changed in your life since graduating and going to college?

Well, a lot I guess. I started college from the bedroom I grew up in, and now I'm living in a still new city to me. I have slowly started to become and act like an adult with managing finances, being responsible for my schedule and classwork, cooking (Annie's Mac and Cheese). Even with all the chaos that comes with being in college.

Did Wooster set you up for success in college?

I learned a lot from my time at Wooster, especially how to describe what a DLI is to someone who only took AP courses in high school! On a more serious note, Wooster definitely provided me with the foundation to succeed in college, giving me the skills to be able to manage my time efficiently and effectively and also staying organized with all of the work I have for my classes. At GW, I have some classes that are back to back with 10 minutes in between them. Wooster prepared me for racing between classes, especially when I would have Mr. Cataldo's DLI US History class in the MS Building and then having to run across campus to Mr.P's DLI chem class before he could mark me as late. Nonetheless, college is college, and there are many challenges and experiences that high school cannot fully prepare you for. However, Wooster did give me a strong toolkit, literally and figuratively, to be able to work through these difficulties and succeed,

What did you like about Wooster that you haven't found at college?

I really like the small classroom sizes that Wooster had because it really helped me develop a good teacher-student relationship which helps me learn better. I also like to feel like part of the community. Since coming to GW, I have had a lot of classes where there are over 100+ students packed into a small lecture hall, and it sounds as uncomfortable as it is. The professors who teach the classes don't know students' names and they are unreachable, so it was hard to ask for help. Since I have gotten to upper-level courses, my classes have started to become smaller. I have gotten to know the professors better and some of my classmates which has allowed me to enjoy the class.
