Meet the Prefects
by: Ava Honeycutt
This week I interviewed Matt Hoekenga, '23, who is the Student Activities Prefect for a very important job to the Wooster community. As the Student Activities Prefect, Matt oversees, plans, and organizes clubs, dances, and other events that take place on campus. He also runs the club Fifth Form that helps plan events like Spirit Week and Prom. Matt is in charge of planning each day's themes during Spirit Week. He also plans what venue prom will be held at as well as the theme. Matt spends a great deal of time figuring out the school's opinions and wants for such events.
Matt is hoping to bring back many things for newer Wooster students. In this case, he is hoping to bring back on campus dances. This is because he mentioned that some of his best memories took place at those, and he hoped to give that experience to others. In addition to hosting more school events, he hopes to have more populated sports games. During the indoor sport seasons, Wooster has something called Pack the Gym. This is when students come together to support our team. Matt is hoping to have more students joining in on this event now that we can be indoors together after COVID. He wants to include more games at half time as well as keeping up with concessions.
Part of Matt's job is being able to make some big decisions about what happens at any student lead activities we have. He also leads the job areas Wellington and second and third floor Grover. He has a senior team that is able to work together to split up their workers.
