Meet A New Teacher: Sue Lussier

by: Alexandra Kriegel

Every school year Wooster gains new members of our community. Many of them are students but in this series, I will be introducing you to the 12 new faculty and staff members of our community. As we near the end of this series, I present to you one of the new math teachers Mrs. Lussier.

Why did you come to Wooster?

I was drawn to Wooster by the sense of community. I love that the students and teachers work together to create the best educational experience for each child. The students here at Wooster are so proud of their school, clear by the way they do jobs and keep their school clean. Since I have been here one of my very favorite things is to hear the students express their gratitude.

Where were you before Wooster?

I worked at Brewster High School in New York for 31 years. Before that I was a teacher in Florida where I worked at the same school I graduated High School.

What do you teach?

I like to think I teach students, and together we work on developing math skills.

Where are you from?

I was born in New York and moved to Florida during my junior year in High School. I moved back north in my 20's and have been here ever since.

Where did you attend College?

I went to the University of Florida.

What's one interesting fact about yourself?

I have held a tiger.

Do you have any hobbies or activities you enjoy?

I love to travel, the theatre, the beach and going to sporting events. I just got into pickleball this summer ....so much fun. However, my real love has always been photography. For a brief moment in time, I considered it as a profession, however, I happily have kept it as a hobby.

Do you have any pets?

I have a rescue beagle named Daisy. She is adorable but is a bit spoiled as she runs the house.

What are you looking forward to now that you are at Wooster?

I am looking forward to working with a club and getting to know more students outside of the classroom.

Who's your favorite music artist and do you have a favorite genre of music?

I love the music of the 70's and 80's. I also can be found humming a broadway show tune at any time. My all-time favorite has to be Cher!

What's your favorite food?

I love to snack on dip and chips. It is my comfort food and reminds me of my childhood watching football games on Sunday with the family.

What was your favorite subject when you were in school?

Not surprisingly I loved math. However, probably a bit more surprising, I really enjoyed shop class.

If you could travel anywhere, where would you travel?

There are so many places that I would like to go to. I would love to see Greece, Ireland, Rome, and Italy in Europe. I would also love to continue to travel in the US, and see some of our wonderful cities and their history. Some of the places in the US that are on our bucket list are San Antonio Texas, Philadelphia, Gettysburg, San Diego, and the Florida Keys. Just to name a few.

Do you watch any sports and if so what are your favorite sports teams?

Since I went to the University of Florida I will always be a diehard Florida Gator fan. In addition, my husband has "encouraged" me to be a Yankee and a Pittsburgh Steeler fan!

Who inspired you to become a teacher?

Being a teacher is all I ever wanted to be. I was lucky enough to have teachers, friends, and mentors that would consistently remind me that this was the path I was destined to fulfill. There are few people that get to spend their life doing exactly what they dreamed of, I can't believe I get to be one of the few. I am truly blessed.
