Meet A New Teacher: Mrs. Fiore

Every school year Wooster gains new members of our community. Many of them are students but in this series, I will be introducing you to the 12 new faculty and staff members of our community. Now as we finish this series I would like to present to you one of our new bridge teachers Ms. Fiore.

Why did you come to Wooster?

I came to Wooster because I was enthralled by the atmosphere of the school. I felt a deep investment in

students and learning from every teacher I met during my interview, and felt this was a place where I

could learn about the craft of teaching simply by watching my colleagues. I was certainly right about that.

Where were you before Wooster?

I lived in Boston and completed a Master's in English and Pedagogy, as well as an MA ESL teacher

certification. I also taught a sixth-grade ELA class in Boston Public Schools and taught undergraduate

English literature classes.

What do you teach?

I teach Bridge 9 and co-teach in Humanities I.

Where are you from?

I am originally from North Kingstown, RI–I miss being by the ocean and smelling salty air in the morning.

Where did you attend College?

I went to URI.

What's one interesting fact about yourself?

I studied Studio Art in my undergraduate work, so I still love drawing and painting whenever I can. I make

personalized cards for family, friends, and now students as well :).

Who's your favorite music artist and do you have a favorite genre of music?

Favorites are hard, but I love 60s-70s folk and rock. Joni Mitchell is an artist I have on repeat pretty

regularly.

What was your favorite subject when you were in school?

English naturally, but also art.

If you could travel anywhere, where would you travel?

I've actually never left the country, but I'm planning on changing that this summer to visit Dublin–fingers

crossed! However, I had a cross-country trip a few summers ago that was a lot of fun. Camping outside in

rural Oregon is an experience!

Who inspired you to become a teacher?

That's a tricky one–I don't think any one person, but the idea was always floating around my head

because of how much I love English and writing (and could never envision myself in the corporate world)

and because I come from a long line of teachers. I did however have a particularly inspirational professor

of poetry during my undergraduate who showed me the power of being vulnerable with students and

transferring passion for a subject matter to them. I still think of her often and with great fondness.
