Keeping Up With... Isabelle Garcia-Fischer, '21

by: Jonah Wald

Isabelle Garcia-Fischer graduated Wooster in 2021. After having to spend parts of her Junior and Senior year quarantined on Covid lockdown, she applied early decision and was accepted to Tufts University and is studying Community Health, with a minor in Food Systems. Izzy is having a great time there, and said that Tufts is "everything she needs in a school and more; Not too big or small, has unique majors, is in a safe area with easy access into Boston, and is a supportive/ non-competitive environment."

She is 20 years old, and is incredibly busy with extracurricular activities. This year, she walked onto the Women's Crew Team and says that it has been one of the best decisions of her life. Crew is soaking up tons of Izzy's time, as they have practice from 6:00-8:00 AM every weekday and from 7:00-10:00 AM on Saturdays. They lift 3-4 times per week and have to do 40-90 minutes of steady state cardio 4 days per week. She is also a DEI co-chair for the Crew team, and is responsible for making sure everyone on the team feels safe and accepted. In addition, she is an intern for the Neurogastroenterology Department at Massachusetts General Hospital. This upcoming summer will be her 5th summer working with them. She is the advocacy chair for Morgan's Message, a club at her school that aims to promote mental health in athletes, and the co-president of the Student Garden Club.

Despite her incredibly busy schedule, Izzy always finds time in her day to run. She has enjoyed running since she was a little kid, and plans to compete in the 2023 Boston Marathon. She has received a bib for the marathon, which has been a lifetime goal for her. Due to her connective tissue disorder, it has felt impossible in previous years, but finally her hard work is making her dream come true. In order to run the Boston Marathon, Izzy needs to fundraise $10,000 as part of her Boston Marathon bib and all proceeds will go towards nutrition research, which is near and dear to her heart. Any donations are appreciated, and the link at the bottom of this article will take you to a GoFundMe where you can help her cause.

In the future, Izzy plans on going to med-school right after graduating Tufts. Her heart has been set on med-school since she was in seventh grade. She is thinking of either going into gastroenterology or orthopedics/sports medicine. While these are completely different fields, she loves them both.

Izzy mentioned that she loved her time at Wooster and misses it immensely. It set her up on the education and career track that she has been dreaming of since she was young. Despite Covid being present during her final two years of high school, she will always look back on her Wooster experience fondly.
