Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene has been the topic of many news headlines and conversations recently. If you haven't heard about her, she has been in the news for months for many reasons. First, her House of Representatives campaign captured people's attention when she launched a controversial advertisement in which she is holding an assault rifle, and comparing Democrats to socialists.
Taylor-Greene was sworn in as a Representative last month, and she has consistently made headlines ever since. For example, she has been exposed for having social media posts that depict executing Democratic leaders, and spreading conspiracy theories, including that the Parkland and Sandy Hook shootings were a hoax. She is also very openly anti-semetic, and she has said that the California wildfires happened because of a "Jewish space laser."
Her anti-semetic and, in my opinion, ignorant rhetoric has made people, including some of the ones who voted her into office, realize that she is a "loose cannon" as someone who shouldn't be trusted in keeping our democracy stable (New York Times). In fact, I feel she stands for some ideals that seem to be the complete opposite of the job occupation that she holds: to be a representative of the people.
Anti-semitism exists on the right, as well as on the left. With the rise of QANON and other alt-right groups, anti-semetic rhetoric seems to have become more prevalent in today's society. Additionally, some of the alt-right conspiracy theories that exist just spread anti-semitism even more, and, as a Jewish person, I sometimes worry about being in danger due to the rhetoric and actions caused by them. The generalization of the Holocaust that many use to describe tragic events just shows how normalized the tragedy of millions of people being slaughtered has become.
But back to Rep. Taylor-Greene - I feel she should be expelled from Congress because she could be a danger to the safety and well-being of people she attacks or targets, without justification, making her incredibly irresponsible. I feel that her lies and mistreatment of others shouldn't stand in congress.
Update: since this article was written, the House voted to remove Taylor-Greene from her committee assignments
