ACT and SAT Test Preparation Spring 2019

We are happy to announce that the Tutoring Center will again be running a series of workshops to help prepare our students for the spring ACT and SAT exams. The sessions will be held on Wednesdays beginning January 9 during our delayed openings from 8:00 to 9:00 am. All sessions will prepare students for both the SAT and ACT exams.

The workshops will be instructed by Chuck Jones. An educator with 40 years of experience, Chuck has taught English and related literacy skills to students from middle to graduate school. He now devotes his time to a tutoring practice to help students build their skills in reading and writing, organization, college application essays, and SAT/ACT/AP test preparation.

Session 1: Reading - January 9, 16, 23

This session's classes will focus on the Reading Test and the most useful strategies to maximize reading speed, comprehension, and accuracy. As a result, students will read the passages, decode the questions, and answer them with greater confidence and accuracy.

Session 2: Math - January 30, February 6, 13

This session's classes will focus on the Math Test. Students will learn effective strategies to read and decode questions, estimate possible answers, and then choose correct answers with greater speed and confidence. Math topics include advanced arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability, functions and graphs, and some aspects of higher math.

Session 3: Writing and Language/English - February 20, 27, March 6

This session's classes will focus on the Writing and Language (SAT)/English (ACT) portion of exam. We will review those areas of writing, editing, language, grammar/usage, and standard English conventions most frequently occurring in the exams, and then we will learn strategies to choose the most effective and correct option to improve the sentence. These skills will transfer to students' academic and personal writing.

Session 4: ACT Math, Science, and Essay - March 27, April 3, 10

This session's classes will focus on topics unique to the ACT exam, the Science Test and the ACT essay, and include a short math review. The Science Test measures students' science reasoning skills and ability to read and interpret various modes of illustrating data (graphs, tables, maps, etc.). We will review the purposes and structures of the Essay format, then practice crafting essays that argue clearly and convincingly. These skills will transfer to students' academic and personal writing.

Session 5: SAT Math and Essay - April 17, April 24, May 1

This session's classes will focus on a math review and the SAT essay, which is different from the ACT essay. We will review the purposes and structures of the SAT essay format, then practice crafting essays that argue clearly and convincingly. These skills will transfer to students' academic and personal writing.

The cost of each 3-week session is $255. Space is limited.
