As a part of Wooster School's continued evolution as a school that is individualizing learning for students, and personalizing their learning journeys, we have entered into a partnership with the Columbia University Teachers College Reading and Writing Project (TCRWP). The TCRWP provides methodologies and curricular continuity in the areas of reading and writing which are research and time-tested, and a great fit for our school. Because of the strength of our partnership, Wooster School has been selected to host four conference days for teachers and administrators from CT schools throughout the region.
Lucy Calkins will lead a conference day on Monday, September 16, 2019 titled "Tap into the Transformational Power of an All-in Writing Workshop." In her role as the Founding Director of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, a New York City-based organization that has influenced literacy instruction around the globe for more than thirty years, Lucy has developed a learning community of brilliant and dedicated teacher educators who have supported hundreds of thousands of teachers, principals, superintendents, and policy-makers in schools that bear their distinctive mark: a combination of joy and rigor in the classrooms, and entire school communities - teachers, principals, parents, kids - who wear a love of reading and writing on their sleeves. Lucy is the Robinson Professor of Children's Literature at Teachers College, Columbia University where she co-directs the Literacy Specialist Program - a masters and doctoral program that brings brilliant teachers and coaches to TCRWP schools everywhere and to the Project itself. She and her husband John Skorpen are the parents of two sons, Miles and Evan, both former Wooster School students!
On Friday, September 27, 2019, Mary Ehrenworth will present a conference day at Wooster called "Dive into the Reading Units of Study: Learn about the Content and Methods that Create Passionate and Driven Readers." Mary Ehrenworth, Senior Deputy Director of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project and co-editor for the Units of Study for Teaching Reading, Middle School series, works with schools and districts around the globe, and is a frequent keynote speaker at Project events and national and international conferences. Mary's interest in critical literacies, deep interpretation, and reading and writing for social justice all inform the books she has authored or co-authored in the Reading and Writing Units of Study series as well as her many articles and other books on instruction and leadership.
Two additional conference days will be presented by TCRWP staff developers on November 1, 2019, and on December 6, 2019;"Making the Most of Book Clubs in Middle School: Talk Structures, Small Groups, and Break Outs for Specific Units of Study" and " Weaving Drama - Readers Theater, Video Response, Student-Led Read Aloud - and a Sense of Personal Response Into Writing About Reading and Literary Essays."
