The preseason practices are over; the snow is melting as the weather is getting warmer, campus is starting to bloom and the spring sports season is about to begin! Upper and Middle School students will begin competing in baseball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, tennis, and ultimate frisbee!

Boys Baseball

The Wooster Varsity Baseball team is eager to get started with the season after making a successful run to the HVAL championship game last season. The team has a strong returning core that will provide strong play and leadership during a very challenging league schedule. Leading the way will be seniors Bennett Wattles, Silas Munk, Owen O'Connell, Josh Carone, and Jarrett White. Wattles will lead the pitching staff and provide a strong infield glove as well as a strong bat. Carone returns at shortstop, hopefully some pitching, and another middle of the lineup bat. O'Connell finished last season by making a game saving catch in center field vs. Harvey in the HVAL semis to preserve the win and will again patrol the outfield and add some pitching. Munk is a versatile returnee playing outfield and 2B, and will also be asked to provide some pitching.

The team is very excited to unleash the side arming White on the mound and provide some outfield play. Max Morales-Thomason returns as the most versatile player for the Generals. He will anchor the catching role, but is a strong pitcher and can play any position on the diamond as well as bring a powerful bat. Michael Lynch is another returning starter that the team is excited to have back with his strong infield play and potent bat. The roster is still being formed but newcomers Chris Komer and Reggie Stuhr are welcome additions as well as Dani Lewis moving over to baseball.

Coed Golf

The 2017 Wooster golf season was a huge success. We finished the season with a 2-3-1 record and it was highlighted by two of our team members, including returning player Brett Brownstein, qualifying for the HVAL Conference Championship. Coach Dan Hannibal is extremely excited for the opportunity to coach the Wooster Golf Team again this season. He remarked, "It is a privilege to work with young people to help them become more successful in life and in golf. The goal we laid out at the beginning of the season was to develop a desire to learn and improve at the game of golf."

In his first year coaching the team, Coach Hannibal wanted to make sure all team members had fun learning this great game. Each player learned the primary fundamentals and a proper foundation was established to build sound golf swings. We looked at each player's physical ability and strength, goals, and time commitment. Based on body mechanics, we assessed each student's swing and created a customized improvement plan. This process maximized the achievement of each player's desired goals to help the team play at the highest level. We are very excited to continue to grow as a team and further develop our skills in the upcoming 2018 season.

The Generals open up the season with a match vs. Chase Collegiate School and South Kent School at Candlewood Valley Country Club on April 4.

Boys Lacrosse

The Generals are ready for the 2018 season. Crocus peeking out from the Chapel garden and Generals playing catch on Coburn Lawn between classes, are the first signs of spring. The boys have their sights set on getting back to the New England Championship game. The seniors will lead the way - Chris Gephart midfield and an all senior attack, Cole Hollet, Cosme Navarro, and Gib Shea will show the younger Generals how to navigate a very challenging schedule. Juniors Tyler Wagnblas, Jacob Smith, and Jonathane Bernardez will provide athleticism and energy to help push us to the next level.

The biggest challenge we have is to solidify our defense, as we look to replace three starters from last year's squad. Sophomores James Hoban will return in goal and James Rapp on defense, but the rest of the load will be shared by a young and athletic crew. Ben Holloway, Thomas Holloway, Sean Fullerton, and Chris Torres will work together and bring clarity to this grey area.

Colin Costigan and Drew Greeley join us after a year of being on the injured reserve and are chomping at the bit to contribute, as well as freshmen Will Russell and new comer Braden Langis. On paper, this is the most complete team Wooster has put on the field in years. Our schedule remains a mix of the best DII teams in the area as well as our traditional DII rivalries. There are no easy games for us, and that is what is most exciting for the boys - they look forward to the challenge.

Girls Lacrosse

This season in Girls Lacrosse, we are hoping to build on our successes from last year. In 2017, we doubled our wins from the previous year, improving from three wins to six wins, so we want to continue that momentum. We graduated seven seniors last spring, which does put us in a bit of a rebuilding position, however we have a large group of experienced freshmen and a few new students that will join our returners, so it should be a really talented team.

Our seniors are really strong this year, with Morgan McCutcheon and Brittany Reid leading our midfield and offense, and Gabby Binghi in goal. Look out for returners Alicia Nicoletti, Nicole Caraballo, Kayla Morales-Thomson, Kate Hynes, and Libby Hinshaw, all of whom have been strong players for us in the past, and our newcomers who are going to take on a big role right away.

Boys Tennis

In the jubilant lyrics of Thin Lizzy, "The Boys are Back in Town!" After a 2-7 record last year, we are anticipating a better season. The 2018 Boys Varsity roster has been bolstered with newcomers from far and wide. Sophomore Charlie Stuhr and freshman Eduardo Godden are intending to bolster our Varsity team this year and returning sophomore Brady Knuff, juniors Christian Nast and Andrew Felton, and senior Alex Stein will continue to lead the Generals in the HVAL conference. We believe that we can make a run at the Championship title this year with all of the added talent and passion in the program.

Girls Tennis

Girls Varsity Tennis is off to the races with junior and senior leadership from previous years and new students to Wooster. Seniors Emmanuella Aspras and Emily Glazer will continue to be integral to the program and returning juniors Serena Sheth, Catherine Wang, and Karelin Dominguez also look to grow and dominate this year. Alix Wadehra and Juli Cerniglia, both new juniors to Wooster, look like they will contribute immediately to our program and we believe we will be competing in the HVAL conference. In the idyllic lyric of Queen, by the end of the season, we hope to be singing "We are the Champions, my friends." Keep fighting ladies and we will have a great season!

Ultimate Frisbee

The Ultimate Frisbee Team is looking build on its most successful year ever this coming season. We have lost four seniors who played key roles, Brogan Heneghan, Sam Cox, Oliver Brown, and Trixie Betz. We still have six out of seven starters returning and the entire team has now had two years of experience playing at a higher level and competing in tournaments. Returning starters include Drew Schnaudigel, Cooper Byrnes, Anthony Vines, Brandon Reid, Jack Barsh, and Simon Felicione. The team has some athletic depth as Matt Eskenazi, Luke Fink, Ollie Felicione, Alan Jos, Ian McBrayer, Archie MacInnes, Nick Wyckoff, Juan Espinoza, and Haktan Ceylan will either start or play important minutes for the starters.

The first team goal is to go undefeated in the HVAL and play and win the first ever HVAL final at Wooster. Our second goal is to finish with a higher national ranking than we earned last year. Other goals are to try to improve on our third place finish in both the Connecticut State A Tournament and the NEPSUL Tournament. To achieve these goals, we will have to be ready to play and defeat perennial state powers Xavier, Middletown, and Hotchkiss as well as other rising powers in the state. The team is deep, enthusiastic and talented and the combination bodes well for the upcoming season!
